What to Put Inside a Children’s Piñata Beyond Sweets

When people think of piñatas, they usually picture a shower of sweets hitting the floor. And while that moment is always exciting, we know there is so much more you can put inside a children’s piñata that still feels fun, thoughtful and memorable.
At Sweet Paper Creations, piñatas are at the heart of what we do. We handcraft each one in our workshop using recyclable materials, with care, colour and personality in every layer. Whether it is a character piñata, a themed design or a bespoke creation made just for your child, we always encourage parents to think beyond sugar. Not because sweets are bad, but because variety makes the experience even better.
Here are some of our favourite ideas for filling a children’s piñata without relying solely on sweets.

Small toys that spark imagination

Mini toys are always a winner. Think tiny figures, bouncy balls, spinning tops or wind up toys. These are the kinds of things children play with again and again once the party is over. They also suit all ages and are easy to divide fairly.

For themed parties, match the toys to the piñata. A dinosaur piñata works beautifully with mini dinos. A space themed piñata can be filled with little astronauts or alien figures. For our video game inspired piñatas, small pixel style toys or keyrings fit perfectly and keep the theme strong.

If you’re planning to smash the piñata, it’s worth thinking about how the contents will hold up. Soft items like bouncy balls work particularly well, as harder items such as plastic mini figures or crayons can break when hit. For parents who want complete flexibility, pull-cord piñatas are a great alternative. These allow you to fill the piñata with absolutely anything, without worrying about the contents getting damaged.

Creative supplies for quiet play

We love adding creative items inside piñatas because they encourage calm, focused play after the excitement of the party. Crayons, pencils, mini colouring books, stickers and stampers are all great options.

Craft based fillers work especially well with younger children and mixed age groups. They also align closely with what we believe in at Sweet Paper Creations. Creativity builds confidence, supports wellbeing and gives children a way to express themselves in their own time.

Useful items parents appreciate

Not everything inside a piñata has to be a toy. Small practical items are often surprisingly popular. Hair clips, hair bands, fun socks, reusable water bottle stickers, bookmarks or even mini notebooks all feel like treats when presented as part of a party.

These are also ideal if you are trying to avoid plastic toys that may only last a day. Choosing items with a purpose means less waste and more long term enjoyment.

Games and activity surprises

Party games do not have to stop once the piñata is smashed. You can hide activity based items inside that turn into instant entertainment. Think skipping ropes, mini frisbees, bubbles or paddle balls.

We have seen parents include scavenger hunt clues, joke cards or simple challenges that children can complete together. This works particularly well at outdoor parties and helps keep the energy flowing without adding extra sugar.

Books and storytelling treats

Small books make a lovely and unexpected piñata filler. Board books, early readers or pocket sized storybooks are perfect for younger children. For older kids, joke books or puzzle books are a big hit.

If you want to make it extra special, you can choose books that match the piñata theme. A unicorn piñata with magical stories inside or an animal piñata with fact books adds another layer of excitement.

Personalised notes and keepsakes

One of our favourite ideas is adding handwritten notes or personalised tags. These could be thank you messages, positive affirmations or small cards explaining the meaning behind the party theme.

Children may not always say it out loud, but these little keepsakes often mean a lot. They also reflect the care and thought that went into planning the celebration.

Mixing a little sweet with the rest

We are not saying you have to remove sweets completely. A small amount mixed in with other items keeps the tradition alive without overwhelming the children. Wrapped chocolates, lollies or gummy sweets can sit alongside toys and activities so everyone gets a bit of everything.

This balance is something many parents tell us they appreciate. It still feels like a treat but avoids the post party sugar crash.

Choosing the right piñata matters too

What goes inside is only part of the story. The piñata itself sets the tone. In our workshop, we create a wide range of designs including animals, video game characters, numbers, pride themes and fully bespoke pieces. Each one is made by hand with attention to detail and built to be both sturdy and smashable.

Because we use recyclable materials, parents can feel confident that the fun does not come at the cost of the planet. And because every purchase supports our Mental Matters workshops, each piñata also helps fund creative spaces for mental health support in the community.

A piñata with purpose

At Sweet Paper Creations, we believe celebrations can be joyful and meaningful at the same time. Filling a children’s piñata with thoughtful items encourages creativity, connection and play that lasts longer than a few minutes.

If you are planning a party and want something that feels a little more considered, we would love to help. Explore our range of handcrafted piñatas or get in touch about a bespoke design made just for your child.
